Contribute to WHO Decommissioning of Medical Devices Guideline

Our collaborating center for HTM is assisting WHO and partners to publish a guideline on Decommissioning of Medical Devices both single use and reusable devices. The purpose of this document is to provide a flow chart and set of guiding principles to standardize the decommissioning process of medical devices. These guidelines will be included in the WHO Medical Devices series of reference documents covering the health technology lifecycle, policy and regulations.

The Decommissioning of Medical Devices executive summary outline is:

  • Understand the medical device life cycle in decommissioning role
    • Need, procurement, use, decommissioning
    • Refer to medical device life cycle and procurement of medical devices guide
  • Why decommissioning is important
    • Less waste
    • Better management of different types of waste (safety of health care workers, public health, and environment)
    • Improved resource management
  • What are the decommissioning options
    • IE. Flow chart
  • How to decommission
    • Prepare analysis of cost
    • Determine end life
  • Understand and use of the decommissioning flow chart
  • Special considerations
    • Risk based classification
    • Hazardous material
    • Chemicals
    • Single use devices
    • Assistive devices
    • Technology
  • Other resources
    • Medical devices tech series
    • Safe management of health care waste

It would be valuable to receive comments regarding Best Practices, input regarding your perspective on key areas of importance, and general comments on the outline topics. Also, feedback on recent group discussion areas including the topics: disinvestment, role of unresolvable cybersecurity issues for networked devices, and determination of obsolescence would be appreciated.
